What colour should I choose for my company brand?

Whether you are a brand new company or considering rebranding, the colours you use in your marketing can make or break your brand.

The Emotional Importance of Colour in your Brand Story

Choosing the right colour for your brand is probably one of the most pivotal decisions that you have to make when planning and maintaining your brand. Your company colours are much more than just about a pretty picture. It tells a story. Your colours convey your brand values.

The colour in your brand carries psychological and cultural meanings, which can vary across time and cultures. For example:

  • Red: Power, passion, danger, or celebration.
  • Orange: Joy, enthusiasm, or distrust (when darker).
  • Yellow: Happiness, optimism, or decay (when darker).
  • Green: Nature, growth, or envy.
  • Blue: Calm, sadness, or peace.
  • Purple: Royalty, dignity, or creativity.
  • White: Purity, innocence, or celebration.
  • Black: Mystery, mourning, or power.

Preserving the Choice of your Brand Colour

Choosing your company colour is a serious matter. I have seen way too many companies that choose their company colours on the fly, because it looks good. I have seen people choosing company colours without knowing what the CMYK, Pantone or HEX colours are.

I attended CRM training the other day, where our instructor casually noted that you can play around and choose the colour that you think can work. Serious alarm bells! You should know your colours and ALWAYS choose it as per the colours set out in your Corporate Identity Manual.

If you have gone to the trouble of choosing your company colours after carefully considering your target market, clients, and what values and associated colours resonate with them, you better ensure that your team, even if it is the IT guys, sticks to the colour codes that they are supposed to use.
